22 Dec
We signed off in style for 2011 last Thursday when we had 15 teams in action. Once again we were favoured by the weather aren’t we blessed in this regard as another day remained fine dry right throughout the afternoon. With extra seasonal prizes on offer there was the added incentive to be within the cut-off point which was sixth prize. The scoring was hot as could be expected playing from the forward tees and with placing both on the fairways and in the rough and with all scores counting on the Par 3’s. There was no use producing a score card and hoping for a prize unless it showed a total of 100 points plus. The team finishing first on the day bettered that by ten and deservedly took the major honours with a score of 110. Harry Rheinhart (15), Willie Whitty (17) and Tom Murphy (19) were a three person team scoring 100 points but the bonus of ten added points meant they ended up deserving victors albeit narrow ones at that. Hot on their heels in second place came, John Murphy (16), Michael Brennan (18), Tom O Neill (18) and Kenny Irwin (21) with 109. Two points back and in third position on 107 were Willie Kelly (16), Hughie O Connor (17), John Fitzpatrick (19), and Jamesie Murphy (22). The fourth spot was filled by Tommy Tyler (13), Patsy Farrell (14), Dan Quigley (17) and Michael Vaughan (20) with 104 points. Fifth on a count back with 101 points were Joe O Farrell (15), Luke Power (16), Godfrey Hill (16) and Sean Ryan (21). The sixth and final prize on the same score (101) went to Johnny Watson (16), Robert O Dwyer (19), Aidan O Connor (19) and Seamus Bradley (24). Nearest the pin prizes were won by John Roche and John Harrington We resume activities on Thursday the 5 of January with the draw for teams at the usual time of 10-45 a.m. sharp. In the meantime here’s wishing golfers everywhere a Happy New Year for 2012.
15 Dec 11
We had our Christmas Outing and Dinner last Thursday where once again we were blessed with a fine day. The rain cleared away early and even though it was a typical cold December day no one complained once it remained dry overhead right through the afternoon. Sixteen teams competed for the extra seasonal prizes on offer and as always there was one team showing a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field. It was a three person one at that who brought in a terrific score of 97 points to claim the spoils which were “John Jameson” himself and full bottles at that.
Sean Murphy (15), Tony Wallace (18) and Robert O Dwyer (19) combined well with captain Murphy scoring 9 pars and one birdie of his team’s total. However it was only by virtue of a better back nine (49/47) that they held on from Jimmy Furlong (12), Hughie O Connor (17), Pat Ryan (18), and Jim “Dublin” Ryan who registered the exact same final score. Taking third spot were Denis Kirwan (11), Kevin Treacy (12), Tommy Tyler (13) and Larry Doyle (18) with 91 points. Patsy Farrell (14), John Joe Murray (19), Mick Wade (20) and George Peters finished fourth on 89 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Sean Murphy on the 9 hole and Paddy Shannon on the 11. Our Golfer of the Year for 2011 is Hughie O Connor who garnered a staggering 37 points over the course of the season.
After golf some 55 veterans were treated to a sumptuous Christmas Dinner beautifully prepared by Ian and Alan Boland and no one left the table feeling hungry such was the quality of the food. Well deserved compliments from us all go to the chef in the kitchen for his culinary expertise which was top class. If it was “The Restaurant Show” on RTE television he’d get a 5 star rating.
We have our usual outing this Thursday the 22 with the draw at 10-45 a.m. sharp and then we go on holidays and won’t resume play again until the 5 of January 2012. In the meantime we wish a Very Happy and Holy Christmas to all our members and to the course and bar staff who facilitated us so well throughout the year. Also to the golf correspondents of the various newspapers who covered our weekly competitions in such great detail week after week-it was much appreciated.
8 December
With bated breath we watched the rain coming down in torrents just as the teams were about to get ready for play and hopes were fading fast that our game was about to be cancelled. However, it brightened up in the west and the skies began to clear albeit with a near gale force wind and twelve teams ventured out. As the day wore on the weather improved still further and all players arrived back bone dry in the clubhouse after trying conditions out on the course. The westerly gale was practically of no benefit on any hole and indeed it was a lottery on the greens as it was hard to maintain ones balance while putting and even approach shots were often left short of the “dance floor”.
Keeping their game together rather well the team comprised of Harry Rheinhart (15), Willie Whitty (17) Pat Traynor (18) and Frank Boyle (21) brought in the winning score of 92 points. Willie Whitty is in rare form these days as this was his third consecutive weekly victory with different teams in the competition. Two points behind in second place on 90 points were Andy Ronan (13), John Murphy (16), Kieran O Grady (18) and Jamesie Murphy (22). A three man team composed of Denis Kirwan (11), John Joe Murray (19), and Aidan O Connor (19) took third spot also with 90 points (84+6). Picking up a few balls in fourth position, John Roche (15), Noel Kehoe (17) and Sean Ryan (21) carded a very respectable 88 points (82+6).
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Willie Kelly on the 9 hole and Tony Harford on the 11. All members are asked to be in good time for the draw next Thursday (10-45 A.M. sharp) as it is our Christmas Outing with big numbers expected. As regards the draw for teams would all players please wait and see who they are drawn with instead of rushing downstairs and then enquiring what team they are on. It makes it that bit easier for everyone especially with the high numbers now taking part each week. If there is no golf possible on Thursday, please note that we will still go ahead with the Dinner at 4 p.m. Anyone who has not booked in for same and would like to do so contact Jamesie Murphy on 051-421151 as we need to know the numbers dining.
31 November
A dry day with little or no wind and well forward tees meant that scoring was at an all time high last Thursday. For the time of year that was in it (the 1 day of December) no one could complain about the conditions. Sixteen teams faced the starter all with high visions of collecting the coveted whiskey or at least a sleeve of golf balls. Competition was fierce as always with no less than twelve teams all carding 100 points or better. Once again all team members had to register on the four Par Three’s and it was here that the foundations for ultimate victory was achieved. Bringing in a record score of 112 points were the team of Willie Byrne (11), Willie Whitty (17, John O Neill (18) and Mick Martin (28). Beaten a short-head or a single point Sean Murphy (15), Kieran O Grady (18), Jim “Dublin” Ryan (18) and Mick Wade (19) finished on 110 points for second place. The three man team of Joe O Farrell (13), John Watson (16) and Tony Wallace were in third spot with a score of 99 plus the allowance of ten giving them a grand total of 109. The draw is at the normal time of 10-45 this Thursday and all players are requested to be on time in order to get out and finish with good light. We had a very interesting proposal which was passed at our recent A.G.M. and it read as follows, “That we have our own handicapping system based on attendance and using Player of the Year points, (3 for a win, 2 for second, and 1 as a guide in our weekly competitions with a review of handicaps every three months”. An addendum to that was also passed in that we would look differently at player’s handicaps who are not regular players with us. Therefore as a result of their performances some may gain a shot or two whilst others may see the same type of reduction in their playing handicap all of which adds to interesting times ahead for our eager group of senior golfers.
24 November
We held our Annual General Meeting prior to the commencement of our weekly outing last Thursday. The meeting opened with a minutes silence in memory of all those from the club who suffered bereavements in the year gone by. All activities for the past year were reviewed where we had some terrific away outings which were thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned. Plans were laid to continue in the same vein for 2012 when we will arrange a number of away fixtures at the best rates which should be available. The good wishes of all present for his term in office were extended to incoming President of New Ross Golf Club, Mr John Dowling, who is an esteemed and valued member of our Thursday group of golfers. Many tributes were paid to our founder, Kevin Treacy, for his foresight in organising the seniors and his dedication in working hard to ensure that they went from strength to strength down the years giving enjoyment to so many. The financial report very well presented by Denis Kirwan and Kevin Treacy showed that we have a healthy surplus of funds year on year (no need for Angela Merkel or Ollie Rheyn to interfere, or the books to be presented to the German Parliament for ratification) because we are well in the black and showing a tidy profit. Out on the course 15 teams battled in out in near gale force conditions, but thankfully it remained dry. The format which dictated that all four players score on the Par 3’s certainly separated teams in a big way. Taking the honours with a terrific score of 105 points were, Tony Harford (11), Willie Whitty (17), Bill Naddy (21) and Paul Laffan (21). In second place on a count back over the back nine (52/50) came Luke Power (16), Michael Brennan (18), Aidan O Connor (19) and George Peters (21) with a total score of 103. Dick Cuddihy (10), Reiner Opperman (18), Pat Ryan (18) and Frank Boyle (21) also scored 103 to finish in third spot. Nearest the pin prizes went to Luke Power (9 Hole) and Tom O Shea on the 11. The draw is at the usual time of 10-45 a.m. next Thursday and our Christmas Outing is provisionally planned for December the 15.
10 November
We are blessed each Thursday as regards the weather because once again we enjoyed some pleasant autumn sunshine last Thursday with not a drop of rain in sight. The course was in perfect condition, a tribute to the staff whose dedicated hard work over the years means that it is playable all year round (except maybe in the snow). After all the torrential downpours of rain we have had over the past few weeks this parkland course is living up to its reputation as being one of the driest and the very best around and a pleasure to play a round of golf on. With the unanimous agreement of all present it was decided to try out a new format for the weekly competition. This entailed the stipulation that all four team members must register on the four Par 3 holes. It certainly was a changed game as it was here to quote an old sporting cliché, “that the game was won and lost”. The winning team had scores of nine, nine, eleven, and nine points on the second, ninth, eleventh and fourteenth holes which ultimately saw them combine to notch up a winning total of 110 points. But it was only by the skin of their teeth or perhaps a missed putt that they held on as the runners-up had the exact same score, beaten on a count-back on the last nine holes (54/53). Taking the honours in the number one spot, were, Tommy Tyler (13), Dan Quigley 17), Willie Whitty (17) and Dick Cahill (20) with that magical 110 points. The gallant runners up team pipped at the post on the same score had John Kennedy (16), Tony Redmond (17), John Harrington (1&) and Ollie Brennan (25) combining well together as a team. Back in third place on 106 points, came Paddy Hayles (15), Aidan O Connor (19), John Joe Murray (19) and Seamus Bradley (24). No nearest the pin tapes returned so the prizes will be distributed next week when the draw is at the normal time of 10-45 a.m. sharp. With the evenings now getting shorter it is imperative that everyone be on time for the draw so that all teams get finished in good light. Our A.G.M is scheduled to take place on Thursday morning the 24 of November at 10 a.m. when a few interesting motions are down for discussion. The sympathy of all the seniors group goes to Fintan Whelan on the recent death of his brother, Kevin. Also similar condolences go to John Monahan on the death of his wife, Maisie, who was interred in her native Roscommon last week.
3 November
Hats off to the course staff at New Ross Golf Club, despite the torrential downpours of all day Wednesday and even Thursday morning when the last of the rain disappeared there was not a drop of surface water to be seen on either fairway or green. This was a tribute to the above group who have done tremendous work in making the course playable all year round no matter what the conditions. We had a slight delay in starting but as the day progressed the rains cleared away and the eleven teams who started enjoyed another hard fought competition where the hoped for tally on 90 points was exceeded by the first three teams home.
Taking the honours with an outstanding score of 94 points was the team of Willie Kelly (16), Johnny Watson (16), Larry Shannon (20) and Sean Ryan (21). In second place were Hughie O Connor (17) John Harrington (17) and John Joe Murray (19) who scored 86 points plus the bonus six points leaving them with a total of 92. A point behind and in third place on 91 points came Luke Power (16) Sean O hUginn (17), John Fitzpatrick (19) and Ollie Brennan (25). Nearest the pin prize went to Michael Vaughan.
Our Annual General Meeting will take place at 10 a.m. sharp on Thursday the 24 of November when a few very interesting motions are down for discussion.
Our recent trip to Faithlegg Golf Club was a most enjoyable one where we combined with our colleagues there for a terrific day’s golf on a beautiful autumn day. The friendly welcome we got was most hospitable and great credit to Arthur Dagg and Robert Hill of the home club for organising this annual event. With a shotgun start all teams were away together on what was a beautiful autumn day. Taking the honours with 90 points (84+6) were the three man team of Andy Mahon (13) Faithlegg, Hughie O Connor (18) and Paul Laffan (21). In second place were Harry Rheinhart (15), C Jordan (18) Faithlegg, Frank Boyle (21) and George Peters (21) on 85 points. On 84 and in third spot came Dick Cuddihy (10), Arthur Dagg (14) Faithlegg, John Fitzpatrick (19) and John Blackwell (21) Faithlegg. The fourth spot was filled by Denis Kirwan (11) Robert Hill (14) Faithlegg, Robert O Dwyer (19) and Jamesie Murphy (22) with 83 points. The 2012 fixture is already been pencilled in for Tuesday October 16.
27 October
There was another massive turn out of these veteran golfers last Thursday when 18 four person teams were in action on a nice Autumn day. With the large numbers now taking part it is becoming imperative that all competitors are in house in person before the draw which takes place each week at 10-45 a.m. sharp. There is no use making a phone call saying that you are delayed in Anna Furlong’s or Caroline Foley’s getting your hair done and a few curls or maybe a few tints put in–it just won’t wash and you will not be included in the day’s draw.
With placing everywhere in operation last week there was the expectation that high scores, perhaps in the mid nineties would be needed to win any of the three prizes on offer. However with the course playing long after the heavy rains of the previous days and some awkward pin positions to contend with as well, winning totals were way down on normal returns. In fact only one team beat the target of 90 points to deservedly take first prize. Harry Rheinhart (15), Fr Ger O Brien (15), Kieran O Grady (18) and Michael Somers (21) had a cracking 52 points on the outward nine holes and they added 39 to that on the inward journey to post a winning total of 91 points. Dick Cuddihy (10), Tommy Tyler (13), Joe O Farrell (15) and Tom O Shea (22) carded 89 points to take second position. Back in third place on 86 points, came Denis Kirwan (11), Peter Goggin (16), John Vereker (19) and John Fitzpatrick (19). Nearest the pin prizes went to Joe O Farrell (9 hole) and Luke Power on the 11.
Rules and Regulations
Marking of ball on green-marker must be placed directly behind the ball-not on either side. When replacing ball it must be positioned directly in front of the marker. With Winter Rules in operation and placing everywhere the ball position must be clearly marked on either fairway or rough with a tee and the ball can then be placed within six inches, right, left, or behind the marker but not in front or nearer to the green. On the 17 fairway a ball coming to rest on the right of the old second green shall be played from that side within a club length without penalty from the edge of the green. Similarly on the left, on the old 4 green, the same rule applies, a ball coming to rest on the ditch side shall again be played from that position within a club length from green’s edge without penalty. In both cases players cannot bring the ball back to the fairway side as that is deemed an unfair advantage.
13 October
Some fifteen years ago way back in 1996, Kevin Treacy, and a few others came together and formed the group who were eventually to be known as the New Ross Senior golfers. It was indeed a fledgling society with only a few partaking in the weekly outings every Thursday morning, perhaps two or three four person teams and it was quite easy to win a few balls in those days.. But like the little mustard seed which multiplied one hundred fold it was the same with our Senior’s who grew and grew in record numbers. Little did Kevin and his cohorts envisage way back then, that in the year 2011 we would have over 70 members traversing the fairways in Tinneranny each Thursday morning, summer and winter, come hail, rain, or shine. The friendship and the camaraderie that has built up in this senior’s group, is unrivalled in any sport, even though they compete against each other on a weekly basis. It was no different last Thursday when we celebrated our 15 anniversary with a few extra prizes on offer. Unfortunately our founder member was unavoidably absent but glowing tributes were paid to him for his foresight in starting a competition for the over 55’s, one that has given great fun and entertainment to us all down the years. So, thank you Kevin, from your colleagues, that appreciative group of veterans who can still register a few pars and maybe even a birdie or two on their round. In perfect golfing weather last Thursday with little or no wind and a balmy air which was summer like at times, the scoring matched the conditions. Taking the number one spot on a count back with a fine return of 92 points were Fr Ger O Brien (15), Paddy Hayles (15), Larry Doyle (17) and Tommy Grennan (20). The runners-up team of Jimmy Furlong (14), Hughie O Connor (18) and Michael Vaughan (20) scored 86 points which with the bonus of six for a three person team also put them on 92 points. Willie Kelly (16), John Fitzpatrick (19), Tom Kent (22) and Seamus Bradley (24) with 91 points finished third. The fourth spot went to Harry Rheinhart (15), Noel Anderson (16), Aidan O Connor (19) and Fr Philip Kelly (20) who returned the same score. A point behind in fifth place on 90 points, were Patsy Farrell (12), Fr Jim Curtis (16), John F Roche (17), and Tom O Shea (22). Taking sixth and final prize were the quartet of Dick Cuddihy (10), Mick Logue (19), Paddy Bennett (20) and “Dublin” Jim Ryan (20), the last team of the sixteen who started to register 90 points on their score card. Nearest the pin prizes went to John Fitzpatrick (9 Hole) and John Monahan on the 11. We have no team game this Thursday as it is the last open senior’s competition of the year but we resume as normal on the 27 of October.
6 October
A howling westerly gale accompanied by squally showers contributed to the lowest scores for some time being returned last Thursday. Normally 90 plus would be the winning scores each week but this time most teams failed to break 80. Maybe it was the conditions or maybe it was the new format which upped the number of times each player figure on the score card. When it was announced prior to the commencement of play that the normal four times was being increased to six there were a good few objectors saying it was unworkable. But by a strange quirk of fate (or maybe it was good course management) the detractors became the ultimate victors adding that there was no problem with the new system which made all team members more aware of the need to score at least six times over the 18 holes. They said it was like doing your sum tables all over again liked they used to do in National School many, many moons ago. Carding an excellent 83 points against the gales and taking first place were the team of Tony Harford (11), Dan Quigley (17), Paul Laffan (21) and Ollie Brennan (25). On a count back and in second place came Denis Kirwan (11), Dick Cahill (18), Robert O Dwyer (19), and Seamus Bradley (24) on 82 points. On the same score and in third position were Jim Meggs (14), Aidan O Connor (19), John Joe Murray (19) and John O Neill (20). Nearest the pin prizes went to Tom O Shea (9 hole) and Harry Rheinhart on the 11. Once again there is an urgent need to stress the fact that the draw for teams is at 10-45 am sharp. If you are not present for the draw and come along later you will not be facilitated in future as the smooth running of the competition demands everyone to be on time for the draw in order to balance all teams and handicaps properly. Our eagerly awaited social visit to Faithlegg Golf Club is next Tuesday October 18. All assemble for tea/coffee scones at 9-15 and there will be a shotgun start for the mixed teams at 10 o clock sharp. The all in fee of €30 for our members which includes morning refreshments, green fee and lunch must be paid this Thursday as the rule is no pay-no travel-no game.
29 September
For the first time in many months we had to contend with heavy underfoot conditions and showery rain last Thursday. Both contrived to a reduction in the scoring returns when the usual target of 90 points was not achieved by any team. We welcomed our visitors from the Waterford Seanoiri and accommodated them as far as possible matching two of their players with two from New Ross. Though conditions were not as favourable as the past few weeks we all nevertheless enjoyed the camaraderie and fun which is part and parcel of senior’s golf. In a change from our normal weekly competition we ran a 14 hole and an 18 hole event with prizes for the first and second teams home. First home over 18 holes were John Murphy (16), Larry Doyle (17), John Joe Murray (19) and Waterford visitor Dermot Aylward (25) with 89 points. The runners-up spot was filled on 88 points by Willie Byrne (11), Jimmy Furlong (14), George Peters (21) and Eddie Rowe (21). The 14 Hole competition was won by Noel Kehoe (17), Hugh O Connor (18), Michael Somers (20) and Willie Naddy (20) with 73 points. Finishing second on 70 points were Mikey Green (10), Paddy Shannon (10), Andy Ronan (13) and Fr Philip Kelly (20). Nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Long (9 Hole), Hughie O Connor 11 and Michael Phelan (Waterford) on the 14. The old bugbear of slow play unfortunately appeared again last Thursday when one team lost two holes which is not acceptable within our group. Yellow and red cards will be in evidence if this continues and there will also be a deduction of points from whatever team that transgresses the rules. We have our normal outing this Thursday with the draw at 10-45 a.m. sharp and manning the board for October will be Sean O hUginn and Sean Furlong. Names will also be taken for our eagerly awaited trip to Faithlegg Golf Club on Tuesday the 15.
22 September
With the weather forecasters predicting a wet day for Monday the 19 prospects did not look too good for our outing to Waterford Castle. However, on that morning there was better news as when we heard the early forecast it was only for light rain or mist gradually clearing to leave a mostly fine day which was what it turned out to be. Oh, the changing pattern that is the Met Eireann weather line, with them always saying there is a possibility or a danger of showers occurring anywhere in the country. It reminds one of Old Moore, he of Old Moore’s Almanac fame and his monthly forecast about the weather. When he was dying his son asked him what weather predictions would he put for the year in the Almanac. Old Mr Moore replied, “Put anything you like son, but don’t put snow in July”. Some things never change, especially weather forecasting. Out on the Waterford Castle course which was in splendid condition there was a rare old battle for the four prizes on offer. Playing off the forward stakes which should be the norm for all Senior Opens scoring was quite good. With all three cards counting team work was vital as it meant each player had to contribute. In the end the winning team were John Kennedy (39 points), Jamesie Murphy (34) and John Fitzpatrick (31) which gave them an overall total of 104 points. In second place on the same score were Hughie O Connor (37), Dick Cahill (35), and Noel Anderson (32). Third spot went to Michael Long (37), Willie Whitty (33), John Roche (32) and Tom O Neill (32) with 101 and the fourth prize was won by Dick Cuddihy (36), Pat Ryan (36) and Ollie Brennan (28) with a grand total of 100 points.
Meanwhile back on our home course on Thursday we adopted a new format for our weekly competition which meant that each player on a team must register a score at least four times on the card. It balanced out handicaps much better as well as making everyone play to their full potential. In perfect golfing conditions scoring was excellent among the 16 teams who participated but the winning team put clear daylight between themselves and the rest of the field. Tony Harford (11), Michael Brennan (17), Ron Goodwin (20) and Tom Furlong (25) carded a great team total of 95 points. Their score was greatly enhanced by a magical ace (hole in one) on the par three (11 hole) by the Kildare man, Michael Brennan, who was the recipient of many congratulations from his colleagues in the club house afterwards. Dick Cuddihy (9), Jim Furlong (14), Dan Quigley (17), and Willie Naddy (20) finished in the runner up spot with 93 points. Third place on 91 points went to Luke Power (16), Larry Doyle (17), Michael Long (19) and Jamesie Murphy (22). Nearest the pin prizes went to Fr John French (9 Hole-7 inches) and of course that hole in one on the 11 by Michael Brennan who received a special prize of a dozen balls.
Next Thursday the 29, we welcome our counterparts from the Waterford Seanoiri group and we will have an earlier start at 10-30 sharp, so all players are asked to please be on time.
15 September
We were on tour in Waterford Castle yesterday (Monday) where another big group enjoyed the game on the island course which was in superb condition. Full results from the outing will be available in these columns next week. This Thursday, September 22, we have our normal four person team event at home which is the format most favoured by everyone. The draw takes place at 10-45 a.m. sharp, so all players please be in good time and make sure your name is on the board. We extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to one of our popular members and New Ross Club President, Johnny Hosey, after his recent hip operation. Also to incoming President, John Dowling, after his recent mishap in Italy and to Pat Kehoe who is making good progress after another mishap. We hope that the trio will be back with us before too long and enjoying that unique Thursday bond that exists among our group of veteran golfers.
8 September
On Thursday last, a 42 strong contingent of players made the trip to the picturesque Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club which is situated in a wonderful scenic Slaney valley. This fixture was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our golfing year where everyone enjoyed the great welcome we received and the superb golf course which was in magnificent condition. Allied to that, the first class food served up in the bar after the game was much appreciated by our travelling group. The sun shone brightly on a lovely Autumn day and our eleven teams (9 fourballs and two three balls) battled it out for the five prizes on offer. It was tough going especially when the first team out mistakenly started off on the back (white) tees instead of the forward green tees. This genuine error was corrected when the friendly course marshal advised each and everyone to play off the green tees from the seventh hole onwards making the game more enjoyable for all players irrespective of their handicaps. In the end a three person team made up of Luke Power (16), Sean Murphy (16) and Larry Doyle (18) took the honours with a score of 87 points (81+6) giving them a winning total of 87 and thereby capturing the first prize of four green fees kindly sponsored by the host club. It was a back to back success for Luke Power as he was also part of the winning team at Bunclody in 2010. On 83 points and in second place came another three person team, Noel Anderson (16), Tony Redmond (17) and Tom Murphy (18). The third spot went to Denis Kirwan (12), Jim Ryan (16), Dick Cahill (18) and George Peters (21) with 82 points. A point further back on 81 and taking fourth place were, Dick Cuddihy (9), Aidan O Connor (19), Robert O Dwyer (19) and Martin Burke (22). The 80 points compiled by Tony Harford (11), Willie Kelly (16), John Joe Murray (19) and Tommy Grennan (20) was good enough to take the fifth and final prize. Nearest the pin prizes went to Denis Kirwan and Fr John French as the measurements on the other two par threes were way outside the length of the tape (5 metres). We have no outing this Thursday as it is the second last Open Seniors of the year in New Ross. On next Monday the 19 of September we travel to Waterford Castle where we will play in their open singles competition as well as having our own three person team event with all three score cards counting. Teams and tee times will be available for inspection this Thursday (15) and where the entry fee of €15 must be paid. Your kind co-operation would be much appreciated.
1 September
Another big field and another great days golf in perfect weather conditions was the story emanating from last Thursday’s outing. 15 teams went out in search of the elusive prizes that are on offer and which are proving harder and harder to capture, such is the competitive element of our weekly fixtures. Looking at the teams when the draw was made a three man team stood out as the likely winners and in betting terms they would be long odds on to triumph. It turned out that way too as Hughie O Connor (17), Dick Cahill (18) and Mick Wade (19) getting the customary six points for a three person team romped home in first place with 92 points (86+6). In second place on 91 points came John Roche (15), Fr John French (17), John F Roche (17) and Aidan O Connor (19). A 90 point score compiled by John Murphy (16), Reiner Opperman (17), John Fitzpatrick (18) and Willie Naddy (20) was good enough to take the third spot. We had no nearest the pin winners as no one player got within the tape on either the 9 or 11 holes.
The final Autumn Seniors Alliance Open competition of the year staged in New Ross on Monday the 29 of August was a great success. All the participants were loud in their praise of the course and the lightning fast greens which the vast visiting contingent said were the best that they had played on all year. The overall prize went to John Duggan of Carrick-on-Suir with a fine score of 40 points. Our local seniors fared well too with Fr Ger O Brien and Fr Philip Kelly winning their respective categories and Aidan Kent, John Fitzpatrick, Tom Kent, Hughie O Connor, Willie Naddy and Sean Ryan also picking up prizes. A special thank you for the successful days outing must go to John Howlin who at a moments notice got the computer system which was down up and running to take the entries and also the final scores. His speedy co-operation and attention to detail was much appreciated by both the organisers and also those taking part in the competition.
With the course closed this Thursday we have a 48 strong contingent heading for Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club. The draw has been made and the first four person team tee off at 9-50 with the best two scores per team counting as per usual. All players are asked to be on time and there is tea or coffee plus a scone available for all either before or after play. The entries for the Waterford Castle outing on Monday 19 Sept will be taken on Thursday or you can book a time with Jamesie Murphy on 051-421151.
28 August
Tinneranny bore a charmed life last Thursday when apart from one heavy shower we escaped the weather forecasters predictions of thundery downpours. The course was as dry as the proverbial bone and was indeed a pleasure to play on for the 15 teams taking part in our weekly outing. Sometimes a team may enjoy all the luck that is going with putts dropping in from all over the place and when that happens they are undoubtedly heading for the winners enclosure. So it was last week when the quartet of Aidan Kent (13), Peter Goggin (16), Mick Wade (20) and Aidan O Connor (20) put clear daylight between themselves and their fellow competitors scoring an incredible 97 points (50/47) to emerge fully deserving victors on the day. Birdie/par on the second, third, sixth, and eleventh holes plus two birdies on the twelfth was some team effort by these veterans which in the end reaped a rich harvest for them (bottled juice of the barley to be precise). It was a dead heat for the runners up spot but a better back nine (50 against their opponents 46) gave the prizes to Jimmy Ryan (16), Noel Anderson (16), Michael Brennan (17) and Willie Naddy with 93 points. On the same final score (93) and taking third position were Hughie O Connor (17), Kieran O Grady (18), Robert O Dwyer (19), and Fr Philip Kelly (20). Nearest the pin prizes went to Tony Harford (9 Hole) and Mick Wade on the 11 hole. The entry fees for our Annual trip to the Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club on the 8 of September will be collected this Thursday Sept 1. Teams have been chosen from the random computer numbers and will be ready for viewing, this will help greatly in organising the travel arrangements between various team members. Our times at Bunclody are from 9-50 a.m.to 11-50 and you will know on Thursday where you are on the time sheet.
18 August
On this Thursday August 25 we have our usual outing with the draw for teams at 10-45 a.m. sharp. The final Autumn Seniors Open Alliance outing of the year takes place in New Ross on Monday August 29 with the first tee reserved from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Competitors are coming from Waterford, Dungarvan, Gold Coast, Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Callan as well as the home contingent so it will be a busy day in Tinneranny. Tee Times for our members will be available this Thursday or you can phone Jamesie Murphy on 051-421151 and he will get you a spot on the time sheet. Bookings will also be taken of our players who wish to travel on our annual outing to Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club on Thursday the 8 of September (New Ross course closed on that day). Book in this Thursday and pay the green fee in advance on Thursday the 1 of September when the draw for teams will take place. We have to notify Bunclody in advance of how many teams we have making the trip.
11 August
With the weather a few degrees warmer than of late and little or no wind on the day it was obvious that the scoring returns would be a few notches above the norm. We seem to be lucky weather wise each Thursday as we have not had to cancel an outing since way back in the spring when the hard frosts caused the course closure. Fourteen four man teams faced the starter last Thursday when with the kind generosity of one of the group there was a fourth prize on offer. It was regrettable that one member was left out of the draw because his name was not included on the entry board and which was the said player’s duty to ensure that it was. Our rule clearly states “that having paid your entry fee it is the individual’s responsibility to ensure that your name is promptly displayed on the numbers board and therefore be included in the draw for teams”. Out on the course and in racing terms we had a blanket finish to the competition where the team of Denis Kirwan (13), Pat Traynor (18), John Fitzpatrick (18), and Willie Naddy (19) won by a short head (oops sorry, a single point) clocking up a great score of 95 points. Hughie O Connor (17), Robert O Dwyer (19), George Peters (21) and Eddie Rowe (21) by virtue of a better back nine were only a point behind in second place. Third on the same total (94) came Fr Ger O Brien (15), John Kennedy (16), John Roche (1&) and Colin Casey (19). On 93 points and taking the fourth position were Dick Cuddihy (9), Dick Cahill (18), and Ollie Brennan (24) with 93 points. There was no nearest the pin prizes as the tapes were left in the clubhouse. Best of luck to goes the Jim Whitney Shield team composed of our seniors who compete for the trophy in Enniscorthy tomorrow Wednesday the 17. We have no outing this Thursday as it is open senior’s day in the club and we resume as normal on the 25 with the draw for teams taking place sharp at 10-45.
4 August
The high scoring pattern associated with our teams was again in evidence last Thursday, when the first three prize winners broke the magical target figure of 90 points with the next four best cards all on the target of 90. In almost perfect golfing weather the superb greens held up to their reputation as being the very best in the South East and plaudits must go to the course staff in maintaining them in peak condition all year round. Many stories of putts going in and ones staying out came from the 14 teams participating and the tales of woe were played over and over again at the 19th Hole (the clubhouse) after the competition.
Taking the number one spot on the day were Aidan Kent, (14), Tommy Tyler, (14), Michael Long, (18) and Sean Ryan, (21) with a fine score of 94 points. Two points behind in second place with 92 came John Kennedy, (16), Reiner Opperman, (17), Dick Cahill (18) and Jamesie Murphy (21). The 91 scored by Jim Ryan, (Ross) (16), Willie Kelly, (16), Pat Ryan, (17) and Larry Shannon, (20) was good enough for third. A unique occurrence was witnessed in the nearest the pin competition when Reiner Opperman was the winner on both the 9th and 11th hole making it a good day for the German as he was also a member of the runners up in the team event. It’s a normal weekly outing this Thursday the 11th of August with the draw for teams at 10-45 a.m. sharp.
Many congratulations from all the seniors group goes to one of our most popular and stalwart members, Dick Cahill, on winning the recent Mr Johnny Hosey’s President’s Prize, beating all the young pretenders in the process. We wish a speedy recovery and hoping to see him back in action soon to Mick Martin after his recent unfortunate mishap on the course.
28 July
A tricky north westerly wind kept the scores well below the normal in last Thursday’s outing. Thankfully the weather remained fine and the fourteen teams taking part enjoyed the game even though only three teams were in contention at the finish. There was one quartet who succeeded in reaching the target score of 90 points where they laid the foundations for that on the outward nine clocking up 47 points. Adding 43 on the tough home stretch the team of Andy Ronan (13), Hughie O Connor (17), Aidan O Connor (20) and Aidan Wallace (27) scraped home by a point from the runners up. On 89, and by virtue of a better back nine Kevin Treacy (13), Reiner Opperman (17), Colin Casey (19) and John Joe Murray (19) claimed the sleeves of Titleist balls. The third spot was filled by Tony Harford (11), Tom Kent (21), Paul Laffan (22) and Ollie Brennan (24) also on 89 points. Nearest the pin prize on the 11 went to Hughie O Connor. A warm welcome was extended to Fr Brian Treacy home on holidays from Kenya who played with us in the competition and who showed he can still play a good round of golf. The volunteers manning the board and entries for the next four weeks will be Ollie Brennan, John Joe Murray and Willie Naddy. This is our complete list of outings for the month of August, Thursday 4, Normal Outing (Home), Wednesday 10, Seniors Alliance, Gold Coast, Thursday 11 Normal Outing (Home), Thursday 18 August Open Seniors, New Ross, Thursday 25 August, Normal Outing (Home), Monday 29 August, Seniors Alliance New Ross.
14 July
In well nigh perfect conditions for golf, a smaller field than usual (14 teams) teed off last Thursday in our weekly outing. With the superb greens like the proverbial greased lightning it was here that the game was won and lost. Only three teams managed to beat the target score of 90 points, the rest posting scores in the low to mid eighties. With a wonderful front nine, where they gathered a terrific 51 points, the team of John Hanrahan (16), Hughie O Connor (17), Mick Logue (19) and Paddy Browne (23) added 46 on the tougher back nine to emerge clear winners with a grand total of 97 points. In second place on 92 points came Eddie Keher (8), Dick Cahill (20), Tom Kent (21) and Jamesie Murphy (21). The third spot went to Jim Furlong (15), John Murphy (15), Jim “Dublin” Ryan (20) and Brian Dolan (23) on 91 points. Here, however, lies the story behind the headlines. This quartet reached the turn with an incredible 54 points to their credit and seemed set for a record score but they faltered rather badly on the home run only garnering 37 points. The lesson to be learned is that “it ain’t over ‘till the fat lady sings” or the final putt goes in on the last hole. Such is the fickle subtleties of the game of golf. We had no nearest the pin winners as no one put out the tapes. Best wishes for a speedy recovery from all the Seniors goes to John Vereker after his recent hip operation. We hope to see him back in flying form in the not too far distant future. On a different theme, another one of our close knit group, Kevin Treacy, is thrilled with the reaction to his shell display at the JFK Arboretum. The viewing of the vast collection of exotic shells from the oceans and seas of the world, which is well worth a visit has now been extended and will continue for the rest of July and for the whole month of August. 30 June
It was a tight finish on Thursday after another great day on the fairways with the weather in a benign mood. Two teams put clear daylight between themselves and the rest of the 14 teams who competed. In the end a score of 91 points was good enough to claim first prize, the winners just lasting home from the runners-up who made a complete mess of the 18 hole when in good position to surpass the score of the ultimate victors. In first place the team of John Kennedy (15), John Hanrahan (16), John O Gara (18) and Tom O Shea (21 took home the “Paddy” (whiskey). In second place on 90 points were John Joe Cullen (13), Peter Goggin (18), Aidan O Connor (20) and Jamesie Murphy (21). After a count back where they had a better back nine (43/41), Harry Rheinhart (13), Tony Redmond (16), John Monahan (19) and Sean Ryan (21) claimed the third spot. Nearest the pin prizes went to Frank Cullen (9 hole) and Harry Rheinhart on the 11. We have no team outing this Thursday July 7, as the Meals on Wheels competition takes place. Next team game is on Thursday the 14 with the draw at the usual time of 10-45 a.m.
23 June
Maybe it’s the clerical influence within our ranks but whatever it is the Gods seem to shine on us each Thursday with that rare gem they call a fine day. So it was again last week when 16 teams played in almost perfect conditions albeit a stiff wind at times made scoring on some holes rather difficult. The target score of 90 points was achieved but only just as only one team reached that magical figure. Again, it was on the outward nine that the winning quartet set the foundations for ultimate victory. Kevin Treacy (13), Harry Rheinhart (13), Larry Shannon (21) and Paul Laffan (22) turned with 49 points and adding 41 on the home stretch they were clear winners by a margin of three. On a count back the 87 points compiled by John Murphy (15), Fr Ger O Brien (15), Willie Naddy (19) and Aidan O Connor (20) was good enough to claim the runner up spot. Placed third on the same total of 87 points were Willie Byrne (10), Pat Ryan (17), Dixie O Connell (19) and Tom Kent (20). Nearest the pin prizes went to Denis Kirwan (9 Hole) and Kieran O Grady on the 11. As regards nearest the pin prizes, all participants please note that the measuring must be done strictly within the length of the tape situated on that particular hole. Our usual outing is on Thursday next June 30 and the away friendly fixture with our Carrick-on-Suir counterparts is on their course next Monday the 4 of July with green fees pegged at €12. On Thursday the 7 of July we have the Meals on Wheels Charity Outing but as usual the Seniors will put up the prizes for category winners in our own group. Time sheet for the Autumn Seniors Alliance outing to Callan Golf Club will be available this Thursday with a limited number of spaces allotted to New Ross members.
16 June
Our normal weekly outing is on this Thursday June 23 with the draw for teams at 10-45 a.m. sharp. A number of our members played in the Autumn Seniors Alliance at Clonmel yesterday (Monday) and we have a full sheet for the same Alliance outing at Waterford Golf Club next Monday the 27 of June. Our tee times are as follows, 9-56, Denis Kirwan, John Murphy, Tom Kent, Jamesie Murphy, 10-04, Mick Martin, Willie Byrne, Jim Ryan, Tony Harford, 10-12, Kieran O Grady, John Fitzpatrick, Paddy Hayles, Paddy Shannon, 10-28, Pat Traynor, John Kennedy, Michael Long, Larry Doyle, 12-44, Colin Casey, John Roche, Willie Kelly, Paul Laffan, 14-40, Tommy Grennan, Robert O Dwyer, Reiner Opperman, George Peters. Tee time to be confirmed, Dick Cahill, Martin Forristal, Larry Shannon, Noel Anderson. Congratulations to our esteemed colleague, Larry Shannon, on achieving what even professional golfers dream about-that elusive hole in one. Larry joined that elite group of players who can be justly proud of that feat when he holed out his tee shot at the par 3 ninth hole on the New Ross course recently. The drinks were on the house or rather on the pocket of Larry which he said felt a wee bit lighter that evening.
9 June
In almost perfect golfing conditions seventeen four person teams teed off on Thursday last in search of the elusive prizes. We had a couple of light showers to contend with but apart from those the day was most enjoyable for the big number of competitors. As usual rivalry was keen where some teams lasted out the pace better than others. Again we had clear cut winners in the quartet of Jimmy Meggs (13), John Hanrahan (16), Michael Vaughan (20), and Brian Dolan (23) who set the foundations for ultimate success when they scored 50 points on the front nine. They added 44 on the tougher back nine to compile a winning total of 94 points. Two points behind in the runner-up spot with 92 points were Jimmy Furlong (15), Jim Ryan (15), Tom Murphy (17) and Tommy Grennan (20). Third place went to John Kennedy (15), Frank Cullen (17), Pat Traynor (18) and Willie Naddy (19) with 91 points. No nearest the pin prizes given-as the tapes were not returned. We have no organised outing this Thursday it being Open Week, but if you wish you can organise your own team and play in the three person scramble on that day. Our next team outing is on Thursday the 23 of June at 10-45 a.m. sharp. Time sheets for the Alliance Competitions in Clonmel on the 20 and in Waterford on the 27 are with Jamesie Murphy 051-421151 with only a couple of times left so please hurry and make contact if you want a game at either course.
26 May
It was the wind in the willows and indeed in every other tree you care to mention for our outing last Thursday but at least we were spared the rain. The going was tough with that north westerly gale battering the course and making scoring extremely difficult for all teams. Some coped better than others although it was obvious even before tee-off that the target of 90 points would not be achieved. One team made a valiant effort and just came up short with a very creditable 88 points in the un-summer like weather. John Murphy (15), Mick Wade (19), Willie Naddy (19) and Paul Laffan (22) carded that winning score with 45 points on the outward nine holes and 43 on the home run. A single point behind on 87, were the team of Denis Kirwan (12), Pat Ryan (17), Michael Long (18), and Dick Cahill (20). Then in third position came Tony Harford (11), Robert O Dwyer (19), John Joe Murray (19), and Michael Somers (22). Nearest the pin prize went to Michael Long on the 9 hole. After the prize giving ceremony the Seniors Group presented the club with sponsorship for the total cost of a new set of distance markers for the course. These are of the most recent design and when in place should give all players a correct guide of the distance from fairway to green. Returning thanks on behalf of the club, President, Mr John Hosey, said the gesture was much appreciated in these financially difficult times for all sports. As for the Seniors Group he said they were a well organised outfit, a credit to the New Ross club and always helpful and obliging in many ways both on and off the course. The new markers will be in situ shortly. Next Thursday, June, 2 sees the draw for teams at the usual time of 10-45. In the evening the Captain’s Mixed takes place and all seniors are asked as far as possible to support the captain by playing at least nine holes in that competition.
12 May
We had a most pleasant outing to Gowran Park on Tuesday last when our travelling party of 40 players thoroughly enjoyed the day out. The course was in magnificent condition where the fairways were like carpets, a joy to walk on but an even bigger joy to sweep a golf ball off without leaving a divot. Added to that the greens ran fair and true so no wonder we had a day to remember on this picturesque course on a sunny day in May. Even though it was an open singles competition we ran our own three-person team event in tandem with it and as usual put up prizes for the first four teams home. With scores from all three cards counting it meant that everyone had to perform in order to enhance their team’s chance of a prize. Gelling well the team of Hughie O Connor (16), Dan Quigley (16) and Reiner Opperman (19) took first spot with a combined total of 102 points. Second on 100 points were John Kennedy (15), John F Roche (17) and Tom O Shea (21). In third place on 96 points came the trio of Dick Cuddihy (10), John Hanrahan (16) and Jamesie Murphy (22). The fourth prize went to John Murphy (16), John Joe Murray (18) and Sean Ryan (21) with 95 points. No team game this Thursday (19th May) as it is an Open Senior Singles competition. The Alliance Outing at Waterford Golf Club is on Monday the 23 May and a few spots are still available on the timesheet which is with Jamesie Murphy on 051-421151. Also we will take the names of those intending to travel to Coolattin on Tuesday the 31 of May this Thursday (19th) when the name sheet will be available. This is an Open Singles event but we will draw for teams and times next week as we did for Gowran Park and play for our own prizes as well. The entry fee of €20 will be collected on Thursday the 26th when your kind co-operation will be very much appreciated.
5 May
The weather forecast early in the week was not good and prospects for our outing last Thursday looked bleak. However, Met Eireann’s, Joan Blackburn, in her melodious tones on the radio gave us some hope in the morning forecast when she correctly stated that the heaviest of the rain would be in the south and midlands before spreading. We got a few showers but all teams were finished before the heavens opened as we were enjoying the tea and scones. We had our colleagues from Faithlegg on their annual visit and mixed teams from both clubs went out in search of the extra prizes on offer. Conditions were difficult with wind and rain at times and the target score of 90 points was not reached on this occasion. Players too were caught out with the greens approaching their pristine best and putting on them while a real pleasure led to some dropped shots everywhere. Our friends from Faithlegg were thrilled with the overall condition of the course and both Robert Hill (1 prize winner) and their Club President, Harold Brenner, both commented very favourably on it. Mr Brenner also said he looked forward to welcoming the New Ross seniors group to Faithlegg on their return visit on the 18 of October next. Taking the honours on the day were Robert Hill (14), Faithlegg, Denis McCanney (18), Faithlegg, with the New Ross pair of Michael Vaughan (21) and Michael Somers (22) with a score of 89 points. In second place on 87 points we had Michael Foley (4), Faithlegg), Noel Anderson (17), Aidan O Connor (20) and Frank Walsh (25), Faithlegg. On the same score and only beaten on a count back came Jimmy Meggs (14), Kieran O Grady (18) with the Faithlegg pair of Eamon Power (19) and Andy Giffney (26). Fourth prize went to the team of Dick Cuddihy (10), John Joe Murray (19), Dick Cahill (20) and Martin Burke (22) on 84 points. Another mixed team filled the fifth spot scoring 83 points with Harry Reinhardt (15), Jim Reals, (17), Faithlegg, Larry Shannon (20), and Bert Power (23) from Faithlegg being the quartet. Hughie O Connor (16), Pat Traynor (17), Sean Hayes (20) Faithlegg and Bob Baker (25) also from Faithlegg took the sixth and final prize. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Peter Goggin, Fr Jim Curtis and Tom Kent. We have no outing next Thursday as the Rower/Inistioge GAA Club Classic takes place on that day. The sympathy of all members of the Seniors group goes to Tony Harford on the recent death of his father and also to Davy Doran whose mother also passed away last week.
28 April
Many thanks to all our members for their great co-operation in getting everyone away on time last Thursday. We had the first tee cleared in good time for the following society group and there was no hold up. The team scoring once again was top class and it took a count back to decide the winners and the runners up. We basked in the brilliant sunshine which was shining brightly over Tinneranny as it was the type of day which all golfers dream about. In a photo finish and on a count back the team of Jimmy Furlong (14), Noel Anderson (17), Larry Doyle (18) and George Peters (21) took the honours with a fine score of 92 points. In second place on the same score were the quartet of Jimmy Meggs (14), Tom O Neill (18), Larry Shannon (21) and Brian Dolan (23). Third position went to Luke Power (15), John Hanrahan (16), Tony Redmond (16) and Ron Goodwin (18) with 90 points. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Paddy Hayles on the 9 hole and Larry Doyle on the 11. This Thursday we welcome our fellow seniors from Faithlegg and again we have an early starting time of 10 o clock. With a big crowd expected our members should arrive from 9-30 onwards in order to arrange the mixed teams from both clubs taking part in the competition where we will have extra prizes to be won on the day. The time sheet for our outing to Gowran on Tuesday the 10 of May has been finalised and these are our allotted times for teams of three with all cards counting. As we are combining our outing with the Open singles competition being run there concurrently on the day you also have a chance of winning an individual prize. 10 a.m. Willie Byrne, Willie Whitty, George Peters 10-08. John Roche (Cork), Brian Dolan, Michael Vaughan 10-16. Jimmy Meggs, Michael Somers, A. N. Other 10-24. John Murphy, J.J.Murray, Sean Ryan 10-32. Tony Harford, Tom O Neill, Aidan O Connor 10-40. The main topic of conversation in the clubhouse prior to our outing last Thursday was how would the change from golf’s Winter Rules affect the scoring? During the past few months all players had the luxury of placing the ball both on the fairway and in the rough. This ensured that in fact it was as good as playing off the tee but now the new rule stipulated that a player must play the ball as it lies. With the rain clearing overnight, but still leaving misty conditions on the course predictions were that scoring would be down on previous weeks. Not a bit of it however as the winning team out of the 16 who started carded a very impressive 94 points to emerge as clear winners on the day. Ably led by Dick Cuddihy (10), and backed up by fellow team members in Joe O Farrell (13), John Harrington (19) and Donal Kavanagh (21) they had three points to spare over the second team home. They were Willie Whitty (15), Hughie O Connor (16), John Monahan (18) and Willie Naddy (19). Taking third position three points further back were John Kennedy (15), Pat Traynor (17), John Fitzpatrick (20), and Mick Somers (22) with a respectable tally of 88 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Noel Anderson and John Joe Cullen. Despite all the appeals we still have a few players persisting in slow play which there is no need for now more than ever with placing gone. The scoring system calls for two best scores per hole and when that is achieved the quartet should move on as the unwritten rule of golf says “Your place is behind those in front of you and not in front of the those behind”. A little consideration for others therefore would go a long way in making the game more enjoyable for all concerned or else the slow men will see the yellow card sooner rather than later. We have no team game this Thursday as the club are running their Open Singles competition. Next week we have an early start to avoid clashing with a society booking who are teeing off at 11 a.m. The co-operation of all our members would be most welcome by coming along at 9 in order to get some teams away by twenty past. Best wishes from all the Senior players for a speedy recovery from his recent operation goes to our long hitting, sure putting, Denis Kirwan, a prominent member for a long, long time. Likewise best wishes goes to his pal and another of our group, John Dowling, who is recovering at home after his unfortunate mishap in Spain. We hope to see both back in not too far distant future.

It was the type of result that the handicapper would be proud of when only a single point separated the first three teams home last Thursday. Again we had a marvellous outing which was enjoyed immensely by the seventeen teams who participated. This was the last day competing under Winter Rules with placing everywhere. It will be interesting to see the scores next week when its back to the basic rules of golf-play the ball as it lies. The winning trio taking full advantage of their six point bonus carded a terrific 95 points which was just good enough to take first prize. Hughie O Connor (16), John Monahan (18) and Dick Cahill (20) combined well on the day. A single point behind on 94 points came Richie Aylward (15), Jim Ryan (Ross, 15), Tommy Tyler (16) and Donal Kavanagh (21). On 93 points and in third place were John Kennedy (15), Tom Murphy, (17), Tom Kent, (20) and Ollie Brennan (24). Nearest the pin prizes were won on the 9 by Larry Shannon (4 inches) and John Kennedy on the 11. Draw this week is at 10-45 a.m. sharp and all are requested to be on time. Next week the 21 we have no outing as the Open Seniors Singles takes place. 31 Mar
A massive field of 18 teams took part in our weekly outing last Thursday proving that a team game is the most attractive form of golf for the over 55’s. The social aspect of playing with different partners each week cannot be over emphasised as it means that you make new friends however good or bad the golf may be. Then there are the light refreshments in the clubhouse afterwards and of course the inevitable inquests of where the game was won or lost. All this makes up a sporting Thursday that is eagerly looked forward to by all our members.
Out on the course last week we had a quartet playing superb golf in dry but windy conditions scampering home in first place with 94 points, 47/47 totals for the front and back nine holes. They were John Kennedy, (15), Kieran O Grady, (18), Robert O Dwyer (19) and Jamesie Wallace also (19). Although they outscored the winners on the front nine compiling 48 points the best the team of Tony Harford, (11), Willie Whitty, (15), Michael Logue, (19) and Larry Shannon, (21) could add on the closing holes was 44 points leaving them in second place on 92. In third spot came Jim Ryan, (15), Fr Jim Curtis, (16), Richie Byrne, (22) and Michael Somers, (22), their tally of 89 being good enough to take that position. Nearest the pin prize on the 9 hole went to Fr Jim Curtis.
This Thursday we welcome our Senior golfing colleagues from Carrick-on-Suir. All of our members are asked to assemble early from 10 o clock onwards as we hope to get some mixed teams away by half-past.

Our members provided the vast bulk of the participants in the club Open Seniors Singles competition last week which was favoured by summer like conditions. This Thursday, March 31 we are back to basics when we have our normal four person team event, the format most favoured by all our players. This is where we best enjoy the fun and camaraderie of playing together as a team and hoping to pick up a prize in the process.
With their term as controllers of the board now expired and this Thursday being their last day in office, Denis Kirwan and John Murphy will not be in a benevolent mood as regards being on time for the draw at 10-45 am sharp but they will also keep an eye on that bugbear of every golfer-slow play by those in front of you. Rumour has it that they have brought back a supply of yellow cards and a few red ones too from their recent golfing trip to Spain to be used in any future infringement of the rules that occur during our game on Thursdays. Senior brigade-you have been warned on both fronts as incoming officers for April, Sean Ryan, Tommy Tyler and Michael Brennan will adopt the same rules and regulations.
The time sheet for the Seniors Alliance Outing in Dungarvan next Monday has been returned by the organising officials and these are our allotted times. 11-38,Tom Kent, John Murphy, Denis Kirwan, Jamesie Murphy, 12-02, Paul Laffan, Tommy Grennan, Robert O Dwyer, George Peters, 12-57, Larry Doyle, Tom O Neill, John Kennedy, Johnny Watson, 13-51, Willie Byrne, Mick Martin, Jim Ryan, Tommy Tyler, 13-58, Willie Whitty, Pat Kehoe, Richie Byrne

The majority of our members are taking part in the Open Seniors event this Thursday. This is a singles competition with Winter Rules still in operation so regardless of how you score there will be no increase or deduction in handicaps as the case may be. You have two chances of winning a prize for apart from the club competition the Seniors are sponsoring prizes for their own members in all categories. We are back with our own normal weekly team event next Thursday the 31 of March.
On the board and in charge of the draw for April are Michael Brennan, Sean Ryan and Tommy Tyler. There is one line (4 players) left for the Alliance Outing in Dungarvan on Monday the 4 of April. If you would like to play there contact Jamesie Murphy 051-421151 as soon as possible.
GUI Message: “Distance measuring devices can only be used in competitions where the local rule allows. The device cannot be used to measure other conditions that might affect play such as wind speed, gradient, temperature, etc, etc.” We Seniors don’t depend on such gadgets. Our motto is, “find it, hit it, find it again, and get on with the bloody game which is the normal trend each week. Mind you though, there is a danger of some person or persons getting a yellow card shortly if they persist with their slow play antics as if they were competing for the Ryder Cup.

The old ballad said, “The crack was good in Cricklewood”. This was especially true when McAlpine’s Fusiliers composed mainly of Irish navvies or building workers descended on the pubs there every weekend. Well, the crack is always good in Tinneranny every Thursday when the Seniors Fusiliers (the over 55 golfers) assemble in ever increasing numbers for their weekly outing. It was no different last week when 18 teams took to the fairways in dry but blustery conditions fanned by a stiff North Westerly wind. With the greens newly cored, there was a feeling that scores might not reach the expected levels which are normally associated with these hard trying teams of veterans. Each week they invariably card the target of 90 plus points regularly and consistently. On Thursday however that was even bettered when the winning team defied the gale and compiled a great golfing score card which showed a total of 96 points.
Skippered by the long absent Hughie O Connor (16) who was in superb form contributing 36 points of his team’s total showing that lack of practice is no hindrance when you have what it takes. Backed up by Kieran O Grady (16), Robert O Dwyer (19), and Fr Philip Kelly (19) this quartet had two solid nine-hole totals (49/47) to capture the spoils. In second spot on a count back, scoring 91, were Denis Kirwan (12), John Joe Cullen (15), Dick Cahill (20) and Ollie Brennan (24). The same score was returned by Johnny Watson (15), Martin Forristal (16), Michael Brennan (18) and George Peters (21) which was good enough for that team to take third position. Nearest the pin prize was won by Denis Kirwan on the 9 hole.
We have no outing next Thursday, it being St Patrick’s Day and the same applies on the following Thursday when the first Club Open Seniors event of the year takes place. There will be category prizes for our members in the latter competition. On Monday the 4 of April the Seniors Alliance will get their season off to a start at the picturesque Dungarvan course in County Waterford with a reduced green fee per player of only €15. Time sheet is with Jamesie Murphy at 051-421151-book your spot early as there are only a few times left.
3 March
Even though patches of fog still enveloped parts of the course we got away dead on the appointed time last Thursday. The fog eventually cleared and perfect conditions for golf then materialised in the early afternoon.
It was obvious that there were going to be some hot scoring but none of the 17 four man teams, bar the winners, could have forecast that a record score was on the cards. Playing superb golf the team of Godfrey Hill (14), Pat Ryan (17), John Joe Murray (19), and Michael Somers (22) did just that with a terrific total of 98 points. Turning with 55 after the first nine, they were in the driving seat and adding another 43 points on the tougher back nine came home in impressive fashion to take the number one spot. On another day the 95 points compiled by Denis Kirwan, (12), Willie Kelly (15), Paddy Bennett (19) and Colin Casey (19) would have been sufficient for that team to emerge victors but unfortunately it wasn’t so this time. On a count back over the back nine, Dick Cuddihy (10), Kevin Treacy (15), Dickie O Neill (17) and Tommy Grennan (21) took third place with 91 points. By the way a warm welcome to Dickie O Neill who joined us for the first time and ended up winning a prize too. Nearest the pin prize was won by Fintan Whelan.
With the new selectors in situ for March and they adopting a disciplined and meticulous interpretation of the rules regarding being in time for the draw it is imperative that all players be there in person before the 10-45 deadline. It is not fair on the majority of participants who are present well before that time when someone arrives at 10-50 or later and expects to be accommodated or picked on a team. This upsets the whole rhythm of the draw system which has worked very well indeed. You have been warned-the draw time is 10-45 sharp-be there well before that or else you may not get a game.
24 February
We had a most pleasant outing on Thursday last when the weather had that touch of Spring in the air. With some extra prizes on offer there were 18 teams in action and due to excellent co-operation from everyone, we all finished in or around the same time. There is no hanging around with our group, where there is a unique and close knit bond of friendship and camaraderie among all the participants. No four hour plus stuff here for a round of golf, just get up and get on with it. This is what makes our competition each week so attractive, as witnessed by the ever increasing numbers taking part each week (71) last Thursday.
Out on the course the scoring was hot despite a brisk southerly wind with all the winners of the six prizes on offer compiling totals in excess of the target score of 90 points. Like last week ultra consistent captain, Willie Byrne (9), led his team to an impressive victory (did someone rightly say about the genial Willie that form is temporary but class is permanent). Gelling well, his three partners, Joe O Farrell (13), Michael Long (18) and the inimitable Brian Dolan (23) all contributed handsomely in compiling the winning score of 94 points. Still, it was only on a better back nine (47/42), that they beat the runners up Harry Reinhart (15), Michael Kavanagh (15), John Harrington (19) and Larry Shannon (21) who finished on the same total. Third spot went to Aidan Kent (13), Ron Goodwin (18), Paddy Bennett (19) and Mick Martin (27) with 93 points. In fourth spot on 91 were Jim Meggs (14), Robert O Dwyer (17), Larry Doyle (18 and Frank Boyle (21) whose 91 on a count back was good enough. The same score came from fifth placed John Kennedy (14), John Joe Murray (19), Dick Cahill (20) and Tom O Shea (21) as did the sixth place winners of Jim Ryan (15), Tom Kent (20), Eddie Rowe (21) and Richie Byrne (22). Nearest the pin prizes went to Denis Kirwan, Tony Harford and Richie Aylward.
Elected unanimously to man the entries board and supervise the team draw for March are, Denis Kirwan, John Murphy, John Vereker and Martin Forristal. Draw time on Thursday the 3 of March is 10-45 AM sharp.
17 February
Consistent high scoring has been a feature of our outings in the past number of weeks. Even allowing for the fact that Winter Rules are in operation nevertheless 90 plus points are being regularly clocked up by a number of teams each week. With only two scores counting on each hole this is good golf showing that the veterans are still capable of having a good round and combining well with each other. Of course the competition is fierce and everyone likes to be in the winner’s enclosure picking up either a “drop of malt” or a few golf balls. With massive fields now taking part it is not easy to pick up any sort of prize. Last Thursday in cold but dry conditions 17 teams took part and the winners clocked up another fantastic score with a grand total of 95 points. Led by Willie Byrne (9) and backed up by Sean O hUginn (16), Dick Cahill (20) and John Fitzpatrick also off, (20) this team turned after the first nine with 46 and then added an incredible 49 points on the tougher back nine to emerge victors. But they got a run for their money from a three man team who had the usual allowance of six points registered on their score card before they even teed off. Nevertheless, Denis Kirwan (12), Aidan O Connor (20) and Seamus Wall (21) brought in an excellent 88 points plus six to take second place with 94 points. Third on 92 were Eddie Keher (9), Willie Kelly (15), John Harrington (19) and Tom O Shea (21). Nearest the pin prizes went to Fr Philip Kelly (9 hole) and Richie Aylward on the 11. All are again requested to be in good time for the draw this Thursday which is again at 10-45 AM sharp.
10 February
The God’s were smiling on us again last week when we got out for our weekly game in nice spring-like conditions. With the torrential rain of Wednesday clearing off in the early dawn of Thursday morning it was all systems go at draw time when again our playing numbers broke all records. Even though some regulars were absent for one reason or another, a new record was set when 18 fourball teams comprising 72 veteran golfers faced the starter. The course was in magnificent condition living up to its reputation as being playable in all but the most abnormal weather patterns, a tribute to the green keepers whose great work down the years have paid dividends. Sometimes in a team game there is one group who end up as convincing winners and like in a match pull well clear of the field. So it was last Thursday when Patsy Farrell (12), Tom Kent (20), Pat Kehoe (21) and Eddie Rowe (21) topped the table as deserving winners with a terrific score of 96 points. A score of 92 points, which on other days might be good enough to win, had Jim Meggs (14), Michael Brennan (18), Fintan Whelan (18) and Paul Laffan (21) take the runners-up spot. On a count back over the last nine holes, Aidan Kent (13), Tommy Tyler (16), Noel Anderson (17) and Frank Boyle (21) finished in third place with 90 points. The nearest the pin prizes brought a day to remember for Jamesie Murphy. His rescue wood drive on the 139 metre 9 hole ended up in the cup for that magical hole in one-often mentioned but rarely achieved. A special prize of one dozen Titleist balls, were presented to him by Kevin Treacy, on behalf of the Seniors Group. The other nearest the pin prize went to John Joe Murray on the 11 hole. With the huge number of players now taking part every Thursday it is imperative that all be well there before the draw time of 10-45 AM.
3rd February
Another record crowd (67) turned up for our weekly outing last Thursday where we had 16 four person and one three ball teams in the draw. But with good co-operation all round everyone got out on time. A howling gale force Westerly wind swept across the course last making good golf a lottery on most of the holes. Thankfully the rain held off and almost all teams were nearly finished before it came pouring down. With General Election talk in the air it was obvious in the conditions that no team was going to reach the target quota of 90 points and any quartet near that figure would be elected to the number one spot on the first count. And that prediction was spot on as Kevin Treacy (15), John Murphy (16), John Hanrahan (16) and Dick Cahill (20) took the honours with 86 points. Two points behind on 84 and in second place on a count back were Willie Byrne (9), Michael Brennan (18), Eddie Rowe (21) and Michael Somers (22). On the same score and in third place came Patsy Farrell (12), John Joe Cullen (15), John Monahan (18) and Michael Vaughan (21). Nearest the pin prizes went to Godfrey Hill on the 9 and Kevin Treacy on the 11 with a great shot to 16 and a quarter inches of the hole, (and yes he sank the putt for a birdie) completing a good day at the office for him as he also figured on the winning team as mentioned above. The usual schedule is in operation this Thursday the 10 Feb with the draw at 10-45 AM sharp. With the huge numbers now taking part it is imperative that everyone be booked in well before that time.
27 January
We started last Thursday with our AGM which was very well attended. Main points emanating from the meeting were that a member must have played in at least 10 competitions throughout the year in order to be eligible to play in the Christmas Outing where the prizes are substantially more valuable. Anybody held up on the morning of the weekly Thursday event can phone into be included in the draw but must be present in person before the teams are called out shortly after 10-45. Prudent handling and judicious use of the entry fees showed a nice profit for the year and ensured that we ended up 2010 in a strong financial position. A vote of sympathy was passed with our resident chef, Willie Rochford, on the recent sad death of his wife and to all other members who suffered bereavements in the past year. The meeting concluded at 10-40 in ample time for the draw for teams five minutes later. We had a massive assembly of 62 players who went into the draw resulting in 14 fourballs and 2 three person teams. Bitterly cold but dry conditions prevailed and as usual the competition yielded some terrific scores. Once again the magical target figure of 90 points was recorded by the first three teams in the winners enclosure. Taking the honours in first place were, John Joe Cullen (15), John Murphy (16), John Vereker (18) and Paul Laffan (21) with 91 points. Second with 90 points on a count back came Eddie Keher (9), John Joe Murray (19), Tommy Grennan (21) and Michael Somers (22). The third team home was skippered by Willie Byrne (9) with compatriots Michael Brennan (18) and Reiner Opperman (19) and getting their extra six point allowance for a three person team, they also ended on 90 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Patsy Farrell and Martin Forristal. Due to the huge numbers of players now participating in the weekly outings it is imperative that all be in good time for the draw on this Thursday Feb 3 at 10-45 AM.
20 January
Game abandoned, pitch unplayable, this was the story of last Thursday’s proposed outing when heavy overnight frost and freezing fog were the culprits leading to the course being closed. Hopefully things will be better this Thursday (27) when proceedings will get under way with our AGM. With several important items on the agenda all members are requested to attend where you can air your views about the direction the Senior’s group are heading in 2011. With 60 plus players now partaking in our weekly outings a fair bit of organisation and co-operation is needed in order to get everyone out on time every Thursday. All members please assemble at 10 AM for the meeting proper which will get under way at 10-10. It is hoped to have all business done by 10-45 when the usual draw for teams will be made. 13 January
The figure 13 is regarded as unlucky for some but for our group it was very lucky indeed for not alone were we blessed with a fine day (Jan 13) but a nice mild one as well. Perhaps it was the long lay-off since we had our last competition (Dec 16) but the boys were out in force last Thursday including the researcher also known as the history man who rose up from his winter slumbers. Full marks go to the course staff for the splendid condition in which they have maintained the course despite all the rough weather we have had lately. There wasn’t even a drop of surface water visible either on the fairway or in the rough throughout the 18 holes. Care and attention to detail have paid off in a big way down the years at Tinneranny with the course playable all year round except in abnormal circumstances. A record number of sixteen teams took part on Thursday and scoring was excellent even allowing for placing everywhere. Some players were a little rusty having had no practice lately but others were bang in form and playing rather well as the results show. Once again the fairness of the draw system was very much in evidence when only a point or two separated the first four teams in the prizes. Taking the first spot after getting all the allowances for a three person team were Luke Power (17), John Harrington (19) and Seamus Wall (21) with 94 points. In second place on 93 points came Jimmy Ryan (15), Dan Quigley (16), Bill Naddy (19) and Sean Ryan (21). It took all sorts of count backs between teams tied on the same scores before third and fourth prizes were finally decided. On 92 points and in third position were Kevin Treacy (15), Fr Jim Curtis (16), Tom O Neill (18) and Larry Shannon playing off (21). Richard O Grady (14), John Joe Murray (19), Donal Kavanagh (21) and Michael Somers (22) were fourth. Nearest the pin prize went to Jim Meggs on the 9 Hole. A warm welcome back was extended to Reiner Opperman and Ron Goodwin, both of whom had been hospitalised late last year but thankfully the two are now in good health once again and competing as strong as ever. The time of the draw for teams again needs some highlighting, it is at 10-45 sharp and you must be booked in before then. It is not fair for all those who are there in good time to have latecomers coming along and upsetting the smooth running of the draw. Our AGM takes place on Thursday the 27 of January at 10-15 AM sharp.
30 December 2010
With frost and snow covering the course over Christmas there was plenty of time for reminiscing and recalling the activities of 2010 where the group had a super golfing year. Apart from our weekly outings in Tinneranny we had home and away fixtures with Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford and Faithlegg. Many of our players were regular competitors in the Autumn Seniors Alliance in Dungarvan, Carrick-on-Suir, Callan, Gold Coast, Waterford, Clonmel, and of course New Ross. All of us have fond memories of that special outing to the picturesque Bunclody Golf and Fishing Club in September where the welcome and the food served were both par excellence. What was a fledgling small little group of men aged 55 and over and the brainchild of Kevin Treacy way back in 1996 has now grown to weekly average of over fifty players taking to the fairways every Thursday. In the early days it was easy enough to pick up a prize in the small fields but now a team would want to be scoring very well indeed in order to be in the winner’s enclosure. There is a target score of 90 points which if achieved could get a prize (sometimes). But the one thing that has remained steadfast among the group down the years is the spirit of friendliness and camaraderie for no sooner is one week’s outing over than all are counting down the days until the game next Thursday. Hopefully this will be on Thursday next the 6 of January with the draw at the usual time of 10-45 A.M sharp. In the meantime here’s wishing all associated with the group a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year. |
