Ladies Finn Trophy Team advance to semi final stage
Our New Ross ladies caused a storm yesterday when they pulled off the most incredible victory in the quarter final of the Finn Trophy in Borris GC. All players knew it was going to be an uphill battle playing all matches away to Borris on their home patch in the fourball format.
The Lady Captain Liz Bennett, playing with Margaret Furlong spurred the team on with their first victory when Liz chipped into the hole for birdie on the 18th. Ger Mackey, with Dympna Molloy hit a magnificent approach to the 18th to secure their win. Jacqui Morgan and Maria Burford, Anne Healy and Mary O Leary came up against very strong opposition and it came down to Mary Kavanagh and Eleanor Roche in the final match. It was very tense as the locals and New Ross supporters gathered in their numbers, flat after 18th, 19th, 20th and then Eleanor chipped and putted to secure the fantastic win for New Ross on the 21st hole. The standard of golf was ‘as good as it gets’, was the sentiment of many present. So, now we wait to see who New Ross will play in the semi final in a ‘Home and Away’ basis in the semi final.
Congratulations ladies, you were brilliant and thank you so much to the supporters who travelled in their numbers.
