Course Upkeep

As mentioned in the email earlier this weekend, we are asking that members make that extra effort this week to ensure that the course is in the best possible condition for the Pro Am on Friday. Please replace divots, repair pitch-marks, rake bunkers and pick up litter.

Volunteers Required

Due to the pressure of work on the course staff, there are a few jobs that need to be done next week. They include:

– Cleaning up of steps on various holes on the course.

– Brushing up and cleaning of car park (Thanks to women for tidying up the flowerbeds) .

– Washing of ball-washers on the course.

– Fixing up broken bins and seats on course and cleaning up litter.

If you are available and willing to do any of the above jobs please contact the Captain, the Chairman or George Walsh of the Course Committee.

Teams

It proved to a difficult weekend for our teams, with all four teams in action narrowly losing out. The Barton Cup faced a formidable Kilkenny side in their second round clash. Mossy Connell & Paul McGrath pulled off an excellent victory in Kilkenny, with Ronán Whelan & David Walsh losing in the first extra hole at the city venue. New Ross struggled at home, with Donal Hosey& John Howlin and Michael Ryan & Seamus Phelan both losing. Joey Furness & Seamus O’Leary were called in. The Duggan Cup team squared up against Courtown in the second round, and whilst Jim Larkin & Sean Murphy secured a valuable away win, it was not enough to swing the tie New Ross’ way. Ned Lyng & Leo Carroll won at home, but John Whlelan and Martin Kehoe lost out. Junior Cashin & Pat Whelan lost away and Bob Doyle & Harry Reinhardt were narrowly beaten in the deciding tie in Courtown.

The Brennan Cup suffered an agonising defeat against Enniscorthy on Sunday. All five matches took place in Enniscorthy and New Ross managed to take two wins there (Andrew Ryan & Sean Murphy and Eamon Dungan & John Whelan) with the deciding match (Derek Ronan & John Howlin) going all the way to the 19th. Pashcal Bolger & Brendan Duffin and Pat Whelan & Rory Hussey lost their matches narrowly. The team was managed by Seamus McGuinness. Best of luck to Ennniscorthy in the next round.

In the Cullen Trophy, New Ross traveled to Mount Wolseley for a first round encounter. New Ross put in a spirited performance, but ultimately home advantage won out. Dick Merrigan & Mary Kavanagh won on the 18th. Alan Furness & Marie Therese Wall halved their match but Derek Ronan & Maeve Wilson, Colin Codd & Ger Mackey and Mark O’Mahony & Teresa Minihan all lost by narrow margins. Thanks to all those who were involved last weekend. Next weekend, the Leinster Fourball play Newbridge in the second round and the Pierce Purcell team travel to Gowran for the regional qualifier. We wish both teams the best of luck.

Fourball Matchplay

The closing date for entry for the Fourball Matchplay has been extended to Tuesday May13th. Entry costs €15 and entries will be taken in the bar or Pro Shop. It is a very enjoyable format and a good way of meeting and pitting your skills against other club members. The holders are John Dowling & John Murphy.

Visiting Captains

24 Captains from our neighbouring golf clubs and beyond visited New Ross last Friday and enjoyed a great day’s golf. The feedback about the club from the visitors was excellent and hopefully they will be passing the message on to their members that New Ross is well worth a visit. Thanks to the Captains of Borris, Callan, Gowran, Wexford, Enniscorthy, Nenagh, Mountain View, Faithlegg, Waterford, Kilkenny, Courtown and Rosslare for visiting.

Mullinavat& The Rower/Inistioge Golf Classics

Mullinavat & The Rower/Inistioge GAA Clubs again ran very successful golf classics last week, with approximately 400 golfers taking to the fairways in their two events. There were some notable visitors to the club (see below). We wish both clubs all the best for the coming season and look forward to welcoming them again next year.
